In Search of the Best Pain Clinic in LA: Pain in Cancer Survivors, Part 1

By | September 19, 2011

Lymphoma is a disease that is often curable, but the toxic effects of radiation and chemotherapy may last a lifetime.

Pain in cancer survivors is a rapidly growing patient population and one that the best pain clinic in Los Angeles should be expert in treating.  Probably close to a third of the cancer pain cases that I see involve people who are either cured or in remission.  The number is most likely higher than this, because these patients don’ t like to complain.  Many feel that they should be grateful just to be alive.  But if you ask, they actually have a large number of aches and chronic pains and with each one there is the fear of recurrent cancer.

The first step in treatment is to convince the patient that they are not alone.  They need to know that there are thousands of patients out there just like them.  They need to know that patients who have had cancer are not immune to sprained ankles and lumbar disc problems.  They need to know that although there are pain syndromes, which are much more common in cancer survivors, all of them are treatable.  Tomorrow we will take a closer look at some of the syndromes, psyches and the succors that make this group so unique.
