In our continuing search for the best pain clinic in LA we come to the fallacy of the one-dimensional pain clinic, in this case the “pill mill”. As we spoke of in our last blog, the last 30 years have seen the steady development of more sophisticated and comprehensive pain clinics. Unfortunately the recent economic downturn coupled with reimbursement cutbacks for physicians have given rise to a number of physicians who see chronic pain as an easy way to recoup lost income. A growing number of primary care physicians are going into medical pain management. In my opinion these pill mills are just as dangerous to he health and welfare of patients as the block shops we discussed yesterday. How can you select the best form of therapy if you have no experience with one or more of the major modalities? There is an old saying, “If the only tool you have is a hammer, pretty soon every problem in the world begins to look like a nail.” At Schlesinger Pain Centers we treat all type of pain and utilize or recommend a variety of modalities from oral medications to injections and from complimentary and alternative medicine (CAM) to surgery because we understand that different chronic pain problems require different tools.
