Chronic Pain in the Young

By | March 7, 2012

If chronic pain is stigmatized in the young, no condition more so than chronic pelvic or abdominal pain.

I would like to begin a series of blogs today on a topic that doesn’t get much attention, chronic pain in the young. The reasons for the short shrift paid to this problem are multiple, including relative rarity and the incredulity and demeaning attitude of the general public. But minimizing this problem ignores its tremendous cost both economic and emotional and won’t make it go away. Over the next days we will look at a variety of syndromes and how they differ in the young from the elderly. We will also look at the special toll that chronic pain takes in the young due to their social status and life cycle concerns. Finally we will look at some things that we are doing at Schlesinger Pain Centers to help.
