In Search of the Best Pain Clinic in LA: A Commitment to Cancer Care

By | April 24, 2012

My staff could tell just by the way the phone rang that this one could be trouble.

The best pain clinic in Los Angeles even answers the phone differently than brand X.  It was mid-morning yesterday at the Burbank office of Schlesinger Pain Centers and my staff could tell by the way that the phone rang that this one could be trouble. Sure enough it was one of our favorite oncologists with a patient in pain. Jackie immediately scans the schedule looking for a hole. A new patient with pancreatic cancer with metastases to the liver and the new onset of pain over the weekend, could I possibly squeeze her in? Before I had finished calling her name, Jackie announced that there were no holes in the schedule but if the patient came over now and started filling out the paperwork she would double book the one o’clock slot and move my meeting back from 4 o’clock to 5. Nicole checked for extra trial pumps and Melissa went through our inventory of trial bags, just in case. Maria warned me with a smile, that if I kept adding patients to the schedule like this I was going to have to kick in another $5 to the Friday afternoon pool. My staff doesn’t like to stay late any more than anyone else, but they are good people and they know that the commitment to take care of cancer patients is a commitment you make every day, not just when the schedule is light.
