Pain and the Weekend Warrior – Stiffness

By | May 26, 2012

Stretching may not be the favorite part of your weekend activities, but it may turn out to be the most important.

One of the biggest mistakes that the average Weekend Warrior makes is his inattention to flexibility and stretching. The more vigorous the activity, the greater the likelihood that muscles and joints will be pushed to the limits of their useful range, but what happens at these limits will be determined by the baseline suppleness and muscle tone of the athlete. The goal is not to avoid these extremes of motion and activity but to make sure that they result in increased flexibility and strength and not tears, sprains or pain. Stretching and warming up slowly isn’t likely to be your favorite part of your weekend activities, but it could turn out to be the most important.
