Personal and Medical Ethics: How is Jane?

By | June 14, 2012

Religious officials often deal with privacy issues similar to those we encounter in medicine.

Friends often come up to me at the club and ask how Jane is doing. Not a few of them are surprised and sometimes a bit put off when I respond to their seemingly innocent question by telling them that I really can’t say. Even after I explain about HIPPA and Jane’s right to privacy I usually get an incredulous stare and a retort, something to the effect that Jane is their friend just as she is mine. My offer to discuss, Sarah, Robin or Betty, none of whom are my patients at Schlesinger Pain Centers, rarely makes the situation any better. I wonder if Catholic Priests have the same problems?
