Instant relaxation without drugs or calories, sounds pretty good, no?

Instant relaxation without drugs or calories, sounds pretty good, no?

With the success of our new Schlesinger Pain Centers, Monday noon adaptive yoga class I would like to start a new series of blogs exploring the long-term health benefits of regular yoga practice entitled Yoga and You. We now have over 20 patients a week benefiting from our classes and I would like to look at some of the ways that it improves their lives starting with their mental outlook. As a regular yoga practitioner myself I know that it is the calming and relaxing effects of yoga that I look forward to most, whether it be at lunch time or at the end of the day before I start the stressful drive home. The stretching and toning from the session acts as a form of biofeedback which helps improve mood and reduce stress levels. I have also found that some of the positions have almost a Pavlovian effect on me, producing a relaxation response within a minute of their assumption. Not bad without drugs, calories or major disruptions of my schedule!
