Sideswiped by a Semi: Personal Relativity

While events around me occurred very rapidly time itself seemed to pass slowly.

While events around me occurred very rapidly time itself seemed to pass slowly.

In the instant between the time when I realized that an accident was imminent and the impact of the truck against my driver’s side door, I experienced relativity on a very personal scale. While I did not see my life flash before me as some have reported I was aware that although events were moving very swiftly time seemed to pass very slowly, much in the sense of Einstein’s theory of time dilation. I remember seeing the truck’s yellow front right turn signal begin to flash and the truck immediately begin to move into my lane. I saw out of the corner of my eye that there was a car directly to my right and quickly reasoned that a two-car accident was probably better than a three-car accident. So I held tight to the steering wheel and prepared for impact.
