Are You a Piece of Meat?

Does your pain clinic treat you like a patient or just a piece of meat?

I saw a very depressing case yesterday at the Burbank offices of Schlesinger Pain Centers. The patient was a 37 year old man disabled by back pain. He had been a patient of one of the high volume pain clinics in the Santa Clarita Valley. In all the time he had been a patient he had only been given a hand full of injections that hadn’t worked. His MRI was old and of poor quality. He had never been sent to a neurologist for electrodiagnositic testing or a neurosurgeon for evaluation. He told me that his appointments to receive his pain medication usually took 4 hours because the clinic was so overbooked. He estimated that the clinic saw about 150 patients per day. Clearly this man was not a patient in the usual sense of the word, but rather a piece of meat to be manipulated by the owner of the clinic for his own profit.
