Massage Therapy: An Introduction

It is amazing how we continually have to rediscover the knowledge of the ancients. Come and rediscover the benefits of massage for yourself.

The healing effects of massage have been known since antiquity. Studies funded by the Complimentary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) Branch of the National Institutes of Health have likewise shown the benefits of both single dose and regular massage treatments. Massage has been shown to reduce pain levels, being most effective in treating musculoskeletal pain, but it also significantly reduces certain types of chronic pain and cancer pain.

In addition to its physical effects massage reliably produces a number of psychological and neurological benefits. At the same time it decreases anxiety and depression massage increases alertness and mental clarity as measured by EEG and computational testing. Massage also improves the quality and duration of sleep.

Massage has also been shown to positively influence a number of physiological processes, including temporarily reducing blood pressure and heart rate. In additional studies massage has been shown to improve lymph flow and immune function.

There are many different types of massage and many variations within each branch. Like other forms of therapy both complimentary and allopathic it is better in some situations than in others and is much more effective if used as part of an integrated treatment regimen, than when used alone. In the end the skill of the person designing the treatment regimen is likely to be as important as the skill of the individual physicians and therapists.

We at Schlesinger Pain Centers have an excellent Massage Therapy program and we will communicate directly with your therapist to ensure that you get the maximum benefit from each treatment. Treatments will be available by appointment only. Massage is a covered benefit under a number of insurance plans and is partially covered under the physical therapy benefits under other plans. If you would like to find out if your insurance plan provides for this kind of service or if you would like to schedule a session, please call Jackie at our office at 818-845-8100.
